I wonder how many objects we “need”. Just about everyone agrees we need love, shelter and food. Beyond that there are wildly different opinions. Do I need internet ? Do I need an iPhone ? The rational answer is no. The real answer is hell yes ! To get to the core of the question, what does “you” mean ? If “you” refers to the animal then love, shelter and food will do. If “you” refers to the deeply spiritual nature of the human condition then love, shelter and food is enough too. But if “you” includes the unique individual shaped by society, continually adapting to find or keep a place in that society, then the answer gets complicated.

What you need depends largely on the society you live in. If you need to be part of the mainstream global culture emerging in the 21st century then internet is essential. If you need to be part of the iPhoneography movement then an iPhone is essential.
Our needs are related to our attachments. Everyone is attached to things, starting with food. But everyone is attached to different things in different ways, this makes us unique. Our needs are not carved in stone and can change. If you need something and it is not hurting you or someone else, then great.

There is no chance that HiLO Lens is something everyone with an iPhone needs. If it was then Apple would integrate the functionality into the iPhone, and I’d be out of luck.

Do you need HiLO Lens ? Maybe not. But if you do that is cool too.
